An unrepentant former police officer who was released on bail pending appeal on assault charges was yesterday sentenced to 10 months in prison for threatening to splash a witness in acid.Jairos Chirema (55) of Glen View 1 in Harare was recently relieved of his police duties following his wayward behaviour.

He was convicted of assaulting his wife during a domestic dispute after he impregnated their maid. Chirema was slapped with a 12-month jail term at Chitungwiza magistrate court last year and had five months of his sentence suspended.

However, following his release from prison on the appeal, he masqueraded as a member of the Central Intelligence Organisation.
This led him to breach the order of not interfering with state witnesses in a pending case. He is accused of damaging his wife’s property.

After that he made the sensitive remarks to his neighbour, Albertina Guzha (25).
Chirema threatened her with future violence stating that he would splash acid on her if she appears in court to testify against him.

The incident occurred on June 24 at around 7am when he met Guzha at St Mary’s Shops while buying some bread.
Ms Rumbidzai Mushonga prosecuted.
