HARARE magistrate Ruth Moyo has granted US$200 bail to a former Croco Motors employee accused of stealing over US$37 000 from the company.

Edson Shereni (51), who served as a credit controller, appeared in court facing theft of trust property charges. He was not asked to plead.

Prosecutor Mr Lawrence Gangarahwe told the court that between May and November 2025, Shereni — whose duties included managing customer accounts, collecting payments and posting receipts — devised a scheme to steal from his employer.

It is alleged that Shereni received payments from company debtors and diverted the funds for his own use.

To hide the fraud, he reportedly wrote off settled debts as “bad debts” without authorisation and used new customer prepayments to cover the stolen amounts.

The theft was uncovered during an internal audit in November 2025, which revealed that a total of US$37 039 had been misappropriated. None of the money has been recovered.

Magistrate Moyo released Shereni on bail on condition that he does not interfere with witnesses or investigations, resides at his given address and reports every two weeks to the CID Commercial Crimes Division.

Croco Motors is being represented in court by Group Credit Manager Chivimbiso Njovo.

The case continues.
