A former accounts clerk at the School of Hospitality and Tourism in Bulawayo has appeared in court for allegedly swindling the institution of cash amounting to more than $50 000.
The accused, Cubbson Mudimba (46) from Cowdray Park suburb pleaded not guilty to theft charges before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Sthembiso Ncube last week. The magistrate remanded the matter to Thursday for trial. Mudimba was represented by Mr Modern Chimwanda of Nyawo Ruzive Legal Practice.
In his defence, Mr Chimwanda said although Mudimba was responsible for withdrawing the alleged money, he handed it all to his superior, only identified in court as Ms Mapuranga.
For the State, Mr Alfonce Makonese said Mudimba was employed by the institution from 2015 to 2016 as an accounts clerk and was responsible for receiving cash through issue vouchers.
“He would then make payments to various service providers and make purchases for the hotel’s supplies. Mudimba received and signed for cash on various dates and thereafter surrendered receipts and change for acquittals,” he said.
“Mudimba, however, never made the payments or in some instances made part payments and never surrendered the change or receipts for acquittals on the issue of vouchers using the receipts. The school suffered an actual prejudice of $59 777,29,” he said.
