A WIFE, who allegedly stole from her husband’s company while he was bedridden, was back in court yesterday where she is answering to theft charges involving US$259 000.
Demetria Zirenga has pleaded not guilty to the offence before magistrate Simon Kandiero.
The complainant is Zirenga’s estranged husband Harrison Marange whose company is Enhanced Mortgaging and Housing (Pvt) Ltd.
The court heard that in January, the company chairman ordered an audit of the firm’s financial records after realising that the company was no longer generating any meaningful cash in-flows.
The company engaged Sahara Chartered Accountants to carry out a forensic audit.
Zirenga’s duties included receiving all cash receipts from cashiers, safe-keeping of the cash, banking, authorising payments and being accountable for all the financial transactions in the business.
The company uses a simple cash management system.
It requires all cashiers to surrender all cash receipts to Zirenga who then solely, or in consultation with company chairman Marange, goes on to authorize or approve payment.
Sahara Chartered Accountants’ audit ran from January to December 2023 last year.
The audit picked out that Zirenga allegedly received a total of US$447 747, ZAR 270 337 417, ZWL$ 110 377.57 and P21 330 and used US$188 688,65 for company business, according to the receipts or invoices.
The total value which was stolen was US$259 255,35, ZAR270 337, P21330 and ZW$109 110 377,57.
Takudzwa Jambawo prosecuted.
