Exiled CCC supporter faces more charges in absentia

A Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporter, Elvis Khupe, is reportedly facing additional charges in Zimbabwe while living abroad, with his family expressing fear over what could happen if he returns to the country.

Khupe, who is said to have been involved in opposition political activities, was among CCC supporters who were reportedly dispersed by police at White City Stadium in Bulawayo on March 5, 2022, during a party event.

Police reportedly used tear gas to disperse the gathering, with some supporters allegedly assaulted during the incident.

Sources have alleged that Khupe has since been charged with offences relating to public order, accusing him of being involved in organising gatherings that allegedly degenerated into disturbances.

A relative, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisals, claimed that the charges were linked to Khupe’s continued criticism of the Zimbabwean Government while abroad.

“These charges are triggered by the fact that police say Elvis continues to speak badly of the Zimbabwean Government even now that he is abroad,” the relative said.

Khupe’s alleged clashes with ruling party supporters date back to his involvement in opposition politics, having previously been associated with the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) before joining the CCC.

In September 2021, he was reportedly attacked by a group of people alleged to be Zanu PF supporters, sustaining injuries to his ear that required hospitalisation.

His family said the latest developments had heightened their concerns about his safety should he return to Zimbabwe.
