FOR one term this year Churchill High school in Salisbury will not grade pupils into streams.
For the first term Form 1 pupils will be divided into classes of about equal numbers.
“A new pupil is given a chance to settle down,” said the headmaster, Mr P de Bruljn, in an interview yesterday.
“Each boy will be able to learn at more or less his own pace during the term and the programme is aimed at the individual. It is to give everyone the same chance.”
Mr de Bruijn said that after the first term the boys would be streamed as normal. By this time teacher would have a better idea of each boy’s capabilities.
Churchill is following the example of Marandellas High School, which after one term of non-streaming divides boys into “sets.” Boys are classed by their ability, according to various subjects.
A boy who is good at one subject is put into a higher set and for a weak subject he goes into a lower set.
A great advantage was that pupils got extra attention in their weak subjects, said Mr. D. H. Jones, deputy of Marandellas High School.
