THE national trade development and promotion agency, ZimTrade has called on exporters to follow clear requirements as global trade is ever evolving, which will aid Zimbabwe to grow its exports.

The country’s exports have seen a notable increase, rising by 55 percent from US$76.7 million in 2023 to US$119.2 million in 2024.

Giving welcome remarks at the ZimTrade Export Awareness Seminar in Bulawayo on Thursday, ZimTrade Director of Operations, Mr Similo Nkala said exporters must be willing to follow requirements in the global trade markets to succeed.

“Exporters must be ready to meet strict standards, follow proper procedures, and invest in the certifications that global buyers expect. This is where ZimTrade, working closely with partners like the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), industry associations, and other institutions, plays a key role in guiding and supporting you through what can often feel like a complex process,” he said.

“It is also important to recognise that sustainability, traceability, and responsible production are no longer optional. Buyers, especially in Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa, are increasingly focused on how products are made, who makes them, and whether ethical and environmental standards are being met.”

He said as the country was expanding into markets like Singapore and maintaining access to the EU, there was a need for exporters to align their practices with these expectations.

Mr Nkala said the good news was that many Zimbabwean businesses are already taking these steps.

“Some of you here today have adopted certifications like Global GAP, HACCP, and Halal, which are opening new doors for your products. ZimTrade is committed to supporting more of these success stories through technical assistance, training, and buyer linkages.”

He said the seminar was part of their efforts to support exporters, help them build networks, deepen understanding, and leave them better equipped to pursue new markets.

Mr Nkala said every province, every city, and every business cluster has the potential to supply the region and the world, provided they are prepared, compliant and competitive.

A number of businesses from the Southern region of the country are in attendance at the seminar. These businesses are from sectors such as fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), manufacturing, agriculture, clothing, retail trade, engineering, mining and tourism among others.

ZimTrade plays a crucial role in fostering and expanding the country’s export sector. It acts as a bridge between Zimbabwean businesses and international markets, providing support and resources to help companies compete effectively on a global scale.
