A  police officer has appeared in court for allegedly demanding US$6 500 from a person whom he said had defrauded a Chinese national for him not to arrest him.

Norest Mubvuma appeared before Harare Magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi charged with extortion.

His accomplices are still on the run.

Mubvuma is in custody pending a bail ruling.

The State alleged that sometime in November 2022, Mubvuma and his three male accomplices who are still at large, hatched a plan to extort the complainant by exerting legitimate pressure.

Mubvuma in the company of his accomplices went to the complainant’s place of residence, introduced themselves as police officers and told the complainant that he was under arrest for defrauding a Chinese national.

They also told the complainant that for him to be freed he should pay them US$6 500 cash.

The complainant told them he had no such money and he offered them his motor vehicle a Toyota Sienta.

Mubvuma and his accomplices agreed and they took the motor vehicle and US$1 300 cash.

They then freed the complainant in the CBD, Harare.

The total value stolen is US$6 500.
