Sungura outfit Extra Kwazvose will tonight serenade fans at Jazz 105 in a show the group leaders described as a “do or die”.
The group is not taking anything for granted as they know that a good performance might guarantee them a permanent slot at the ceremonial home of jazz.“We take all our shows seriously and this one is no different. We are constantly perfecting our act and we haven’t reached where we want to be.
“This is a new project, but the response we are getting is overwhelming. We want to thank the promoters who are supporting us. We have already been to Kadoma, Chitungwiza and pretty soon we will have covered all the corners of the country,” he said Francis Dhaka, one of the senior band members.
It seems the group is slowly finding the groove after a false start. Their debut album— “Ndizvo Zviripo” — is slowly receiving airplay on all radio stations and watering holes.
The entry of Extra Kwazvose into the music industry has divided opinion among the fans.
Their debut gig at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex was a “show made in hell” with some sections labelling them “rebels without a cause”.
They tried so many things at once in the process disrupting their sound and vocal clarity.
The group also relied heavily on the chants they used to do during their days at Orchestra Mberikwazvo, such as “Shika Shika” and “We are sitting on top of the rest, others follow” forcing fans to conclude that they lacked creativity.
However, it must be noted that given time, the group can sync and fuse well. Obert Gomba remains one of the best drummers in the country and Noel Nyazanda is also a guitarist in his own league. They just need time to polish their act.
