Eyes on Equality! AUSC Region 5 Breaks New Ground for Visually Impaired Athletes

AUSC Region 5 is setting the pace for inclusive sport with a groundbreaking Classification Workshop for Visually Impaired Athletes, held in Botswana from 23–25 April — and the region is buzzing!
With the Region 5 Youth Games in Namibia around the corner, the workshop brought together optometrists and sport officials from 10 countries in a bid to ensure fair and evidence-based athlete classification.
Ugandan expert Joseph Sebwana led the charge, pushing for proper recognition and equal competition platforms for visually impaired athletes.
“We’ve taken a major step forward in levelling the playing field,” Sebwana declared, as participants dove into hands-on training, aligned on global standards, and exchanged best practices.

The clock is ticking, with the Final Entry by Name deadline set for 30 April, and the region is leaving nothing to chance.
Region 5 CEO Stanley Mutoya hailed the initiative as part of a broader game-changer — a regional inclusion drive featuring Special Olympics events, an Inter-Ministerial Forum, and the buzzworthy Making Noise Campaign.

And that’s not all! An Assistive Technologies Expo is also on the cards — proving that Region 5 isn’t just talking inclusion, they’re living it.
Sport for all — no one left behind!
