ALL eyes will be on Donnybrook Park Raceway in Harare tomorrow, as motor racing returns with the staging of the third round of the 2025 National Championships on the main circuit.
With the support of Ezytrack Vehicle Tracking Systems, Sables Motor Club have attracted a full field of saloon and sports cars, driven by Zimbabwe’s fastest drivers.
The first two rounds of the championship, held in Harare and Bulawayo, have produced a surprise A Class saloon leader. Des Morris has been “Mr Consistency” in his Nissan 370Z, finishing on the podium in every race, and he enjoys a four-point advantage over Richard Robinson in a Toyota Supra.
Barney Rogers holds third place in a BMW turbo, ahead of the Bulawayo pairing of Calvin Rademeyer and Aiden White.
The 2000cc Turbo Class has been dominated by Bulawayo drivers, with Angelo Tavares taking his Subaru to a narrow points lead over Dylan Pragji’s Polo.
Usama Patel is the only Harare driver in the points, holding third in his Toyota MR2. Bulawayo drivers also lead the 2000cc Class, with Quinton Holder ahead of Winston Jardine.
The biggest saloon class is the 1600cc, where eight drivers have scored points this year, including two of Zimbabwe’s fastest female drivers.
Declan Mellor is a scant two points ahead of Catherine Zevgolis, the daughter of National Champion Mano Zevgolis, who proved faster at the last Donnybrook meeting. The question is whether can Declan raise his game to protect his championship lead?
Zane Shah, Neil Bruce and Ronnie Parcell are all Toyota powered on Sunday, as is Jamie Kerwin aboard her MR2.
In the sports car class, Eric Heard will make his first appearance of the year aboard his Yamaha-powered Super 7, and will challenge the Olsen brothers, Carl and Brett, as well as Gary Kirk.
Maurizio Savo has been spotted practising at the track, as has Des Morris, so close, exciting racing is assured. The race day, which will culminate in the 10-lap Ezytrack Grand Prix, will be the first time that drivers from all classes will compete against each other in a handicap format based on their previous lap times.
