uses such as offices, restaurants, banks, hair salons and shops.
The changes are aimed at bringing services close to the people and to discourage over reliance on motorised transport as people will be within walking distance to services.
The land use changes are also a response to demand as people had already started invading residential areas setting up offices.
According to the urban planning services 2010 annual report, the city’s landscape has changed at a fast pace prompting the review of existing spatial plans and preparations of new ones that are flexible and meet cultural diversity that the city is experiencing.
City director urban planning services, Mr Psychology Chiwanga, heads the department. Eleven local development plans are at various stages of implementation while more have been targeted for amendment. The Arundel local plan seeks the expansion of the suburban shopping centre and to integrate it “with the surrounding residential area”.
The plan will see the conversion of surrounding properties into commercial uses such as shops, restaurants and offices.
The Airport plan will result in the development of the land around the airport and the creation of the airport delimitation zone, which will zone land export related warehouses, packaging firms, clearing houses, offices and tourism facilities.
