In a remarkable display of community spirit and philanthropy, a Marondera church has undertaken a project to help improve the local elementary school by erecting a security fence worth over US$9000.
The church, Assemblies of God-Spiritual Movement (AoG-SM) which has been an integral part of the community for years, recognised the need for the fence at St Ludger Secondary School due to its proximity.
The one-kilometer-long fence cost US$9216 for the whole project.
The effort was met with overwhelming support from churchgoers, who saw it as an opportunity to give back to their community and make a tangible difference in the lives of local children.
Situated in Marondera East constituency recently, the school is one of the biggest in rural Marondera with a wide catchment area for the newly resettled farmers in the Masomera area.
Speaking during a handover ceremony at the school, AoG-SM Secretary General Luckmore Zinyama said the donation was funded by church members.
“We are excited we have done this, erecting a perimeter fence at the school for the benefit of learners, teaching staff, and the community at large.
“As a church, we have been working together with the school since 2005 and everything was funded by the church members.
“Three students who were AOG-SM members approached the authorities seeking permission to start a group called Light of Hope inspired by our late founder Reverend Nyika.
“We have been preaching to learners for some time, spreading the message of holiness. Today we have come with this gift of the perimeter fence.”
Marondera East legislator Vimbai Mutokonyi who was the guest of honour at the event hailed the church for its role in community development.
“We welcome this great initiative by AoG-SM in giving back to its community. “The learners and teaching staff need support from various stakeholders and today we are here celebrating what the church has done.
“This major facelift is welcome and we appeal to other denominations to copy and bring development to our schools,” said Mutokonyi.
The church was founded in 1978 by the late Francis Nyika and is headquartered in Marondera.
