Fairy Café fire: City rallies behind ‘Ms Kay’ and staff

SHOCK, heartbreak and prayer flooded social media on Wednesday after a fire tore through the popular Fairy Café in Bulawayo, one of the city’s most loved dining spots.

Within minutes of images circulating online, hundreds of residents took to the comments section expressing disbelief and concern, with many first asking the most important question: “Is everyone okay?”
“I pray that there are no casualties,” wrote Stanford Chiwanga.
“Hopefully no one was inside,” posted Asimbongeni Mahlangu, while Adrianna Vanbiljon asked: “Is everyone okay? Any further updates?”

After posting on Chronicle, Sunday News and B Metro socials, the comments shot up to nearly 2000 as for many, the café was more than just a restaurant — it was a meeting place, a celebration venue and, for some, a dream destination they had yet to visit.
“My heart sank,” said Bongani Hoyo Marume. “So sorry hako Kathy.”
Several messages were directed at the owner, Kathy Mwanza or “Ms Kay,” with friends, customers and well-wishers sending words of strength.

“So sorry Kathy and the Fairy family,” wrote Nongqabutho Abu-Basutu.
“Hugs Ms Kay, you shall rise again,” added Sheba Mazarura.
As emotions poured out, debate also emerged around insurance and possible causes of the blaze.

“I hope it was insured,” commented Diba Sibanda Bongo Mbonisi. “How do you recover from this?”
That sentiment was repeated by many, with others pointing out that even insurance would depend on investigations into the cause of the fire.
Some residents called for a thorough probe.

“Police must investigate the incident,” wrote Vuyo Mpofu, suggesting the possibility of competition-related sabotage.
Nqobile Matshelela added: “Arson probably, I hope the culprit is found.”
Others cautioned against rushing to conclusions, highlighting safety compliance instead.

“It’s not about ubuhle besakhiwo,” said Temba Nkiwane. “Compliance, fire and electricity checks, gas leaks — restaurants are at risk all the time.”

Another commenter stressed the need for preventative systems such as sprinklers, smoke detectors and proper staff training in handling gas appliances.
The incident also reignited concerns about emergency response capacity in the city.

Some residents questioned whether fire engines had adequate water supplies, referencing previous incidents in Bulawayo where access to hydrants was reportedly a challenge.

However, authorities had not yet released a detailed statement on the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage at the time of publication.
Beyond the physical damage, many were worried about the livelihoods tied to the café.

“Those kids bavuka bengela msebenzi,” lamented Tsoaranang Thandolwenkosi Pitsi, referring to employees who may now be out of work.
“Kunzima no job to other people nkosi yami,” added Mbekezeli Ncube.

For a business widely regarded as one of Bulawayo’s trendiest spots — famous for its cakes, stylish décor and vibrant atmosphere — the loss feels deeply personal to the community.

“Even though I have never set foot inside, it is a vibrant business for Bulawayo,” wrote Bhekimpilo Ngalabesi KaMoyo.
Others reminisced about special moments spent there, including Valentine’s Day celebrations and birthday plans that will now have to wait.

From “Nkosi yami” to “Mwari wangu,” the multilingual chorus of grief reflected a city united in sympathy.
“Devil is a liar. You shall rise again,” one supporter wrote.

As investigations continue, residents are hoping for clarity — and, above all, that no lives were lost.
