THREE bogus diamond dealers were on Wednesday arraigned before the courts for selling a fake diamond to a Chipinge businesswoman.
The trio, Wellington Chamunorwa (38), Vengai Chivange (36) and Brighton Mufunda (26) appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Noah Gwatidzo facing fraud charges.
They pleaded guilty to the charge.
It was the State case led by Mr Edith Phiri that on February 27, the three accused persons hatched a plan to defraud Caroline Chivange. “The three approached the complainant masquerading as foreigners who were unable to count the US dollars they had in their possession and also needed assistance in selling their pieces of diamonds.
“The first accused, Chamunorwa gave the complainant a stone which was wrapped in a khaki cover who then lied to Chivange that it was a diamond.
“After negotiations, the complainant agreed to buy the diamond for $440 and top it with a Nokia and Android touch screen cellphone,” she said.
Mrs Phiri said when Chivange checked the so-called diamond she discovered that it was an ordinary stone.
