Mali in a 2012 Nations Cup qualifier at Rufaro to bounce back into contention for a place at the finals.
Since referee Daniel Bennett blew the final whistle to end the contest on Sunday, Zimbabwean fans have been having a party and, while they celebrated the win, some believe there is still a lot of work to be done.
Here are some of the comments:
Farai Tereraushe
The boys showed a lot of character on the field and hope they will have a long camp before their next match.
Lazzie Hacha
Ovidy should play just behind the two strikers and Edward Sadomba occupies that right wing. We don’t need two holding midfielders, especially when we play at home and are looking for a victory. There is light at the end of the tunnel from what we saw yesterday.
Watson Chagwiza
The big void for a creative midfielder playing behind the strikers needs to be filled. Mushekwi needs that kind of player to push a smooth through pass because his first touch from a long pass is poor. Since Ovidy can play anywhere in midfield he could take that slot and the right wing can be taken by Quincy. If we are playing Tinashe and Justice together for whatever tactical reason, then Sadomba, who is comfortable receiving the long ball, should start ahead of Mushekwi.
Benjamin Nyamakawi
Karuru behind strikers, Sadomba to compete with Mushekwi to improve on ball control and Quincy to take Majabvi’s place and we missed Bhasera. Khamaaaaaaaaaaa and Musonaaaaaaaaaa, stars for the future. Ten years to come zvichifaya.
Mfanelo Mavuwa
I think we need to recall Dickson Choto, these defenders vakatsva, even for their clubs they are not convincing, especially Sweswe, otherwise team just needs more time, this is really their first home game.
Reginald Betera
In football, a win is a win no matter how ugly. Mushekwi was subdued because of the obvious reason that we don’t have a playmaker. Justice was slow and our defence is still suspect and we conceded a soft goal. We hope to rectify these shortcomings before the Liberia game. Thanks to Zifa for a new kit.
Peter Chimwayange
So far, so good, great result. That’s what we were looking for. Need for improvement next time.
Titus Runyambo
Why can’t we talk to Benji to come and try him just behind Nyasha and Knowledge? His experience, and the fact that he was a striker, means he knows the passes to make. Look here guys, Dwight Yoke did it for his country and I think Benji can do the same. He has got pace, too.
Zacharia Mateta
Good performance by the Warriors. The midfield still has to improve, Majabvi was slow and was taking too much time with the ball. Clemence Matawu is still needed in the team. We should play with one anchorman so that we have more attacking midfielders who push the ball forward. Mapemba and Vusa Nyoni were excellent on the flanks but Method and Seswe should develop a better understanding of each other. They were a bit jittery and should be more composed.
Eric Mourinho Chipangura
By the same spirit that he opted for Vusa (an attacker) for the leftback position Mapeza should have had Katsande ahead of Majabvi (not that the Chief is bad but he limits our options in attack) or he could have used Quincy on the flank and Ovidy in central attacking midfield. Gutu might be an option as a direct replacement of Majabvi, especially at home. I must say I disagreed with those who whistled at Mushekwi because he worked so hard, under difficult conditions, and we still needed that physical presence during the run in, his substitution was not a proper decision. AFTER ALL HAS BEEN SAID IT’S SO SWEET TO DOWN A TEAM FULL OF PROFESSIONALS LIKE MALI. WELL DONE WARRIORS!
Prosper Mpofu
The team is okay, we need only a few additions in Gutu, probably Esrom for his experience, try Mapuranga in defence and do away with Majabvi as he was out of sorts. Overally the performance was good and we need a few serious friendlies. It was refreshng to see the boys clad in a new kit sponsored by a well known brand PUMA, thumbs up for that.

The Warriors played good football. The only thing I am not happy about are some of the fans who do not appreciate that mistakes are common, especially at such a grand stage where thousands, if not millions, are watching every step of the action. Some fans would shout obscenities to a point of embarrassing our beloved Warriors. To all Zimbabweans I say rise up and support this generation, the Dream Team era is certainly on our doorsteps.

Tapuwa Kapini (7) – Had a good day cutting out those crosses and distributing the ball, need to improve on communicating or commanding his defence. Gilbert Mapemba (8) – The young man rose to the occasion being the only locally-based player picked to play in this do-or-die encounter and I am sure he will be on the books of Trott Moloto soon. Vusa Nyoni (7) – Has vastly improved especially on crossing and passing. Thomas Sweswe (6) – That lapse in concentration caused us unnecessary distress with that Mali goal. Method Mwanjali (7) – Not because he wore jersey number 7 but because he played like a true captain shutting out the physically superior Malians and starting some good attacking moves. Tinashe Nengomasha (8) – He defended and attacked well. Father would have been my choice of Captain. Justice Majabvi (5) – Lost possession unnecessarily and tended to play backwards more than forward. Ovidy Karuru (10) – Not much to comment on the man of the day, vastly improved and holds the key for the future. Khama Billiart (9) – The revelation of the day, this young man, full of tricks, will torment many defences for to come. Knowledge Musona (10) – The young man is not the Absa Premiership Golden Boot holder for nothing. He was a real inspiration to the team. Nyasha Mushekwi (7) – He may not have scored but he held his own against the giants from Mali. Edward Sadomba (5) – Made very little contribution. Willard Katsande (7) – His introduction gave the team mobility in the attacking third of the field.

The teams looks okay but Majabvi was anonymous in the middle of the park, the defence was kind of suspect and Method must REALLY command it as a true Warrior, otherwise in future we should not let in such silly scores. Mushekwi played so well against those physical players and his substitution was not right in that we created that void in attack and the Malians started building from the back. I really feel that a fit again Esrom is needed and we push Father more into attack and relegate Majabvi to the terraces. Otherwise well done Khama Biliiat.
George Damson
A good show by the boys unlike the mediocrity we witnessed against Cape Verde. We have exciting young talent we must build on. I will not join the brigade that criticises players based on club loyalty.
Tinashe Makoni
Normara and the Warriors, thanks for the win it was a long time since we last had such an atmosphere as far as our national team is concerned. The team selection was commendable, however, some individual players – Mushekwi and Majabvi – failed to read the game and meet the demands of the game. It will be too harsh to say Majabvi should go to the terraces, my fellow supporters we don’t have to be emotional but we have to talk football
Jonathan Jaricha
Well played and well dressed Zimbabwe.
Patrick Bhunu
I think Mapeza has done well in coming up with a very formidable and competitive side. The ball is now in Zifa’s court to make sure that the current side, together with our Under-23s, are catered for properly. With the kind of talent that we have at the moment, and with the current coach, I foresee us in Brazil come 2014.
Tonsen Nhanga
It was refreshing to watch a relatively young Warriors team put up a performance like that yesterday. The game was exciting, especially going forward where our young lads were a thorn in the Malians’ flesh. Majabvi though was a misfit in the team and tactically one holding midfielder when playing at home would have been adequate. Karuru, Billiat, Musona are our future. Take care of these boys.
Itai Munyoro
Big improvement but we still have a long way to go. I think Karuru must play behind the strikers and Majabvi must take his place on the bench. Nomara not a bad coach after all.
Kelvin Musembwa
Just need to play some frindlies, team yakabatana iyi.
Dee Mashavave
Majabvi should have been pulled out earlier, he still plays going backwards. A bit of Gutu and a fit Bhasera. Ovidy showed us he is in Europe. Vusa has grown in confidnce. Mushekwi had no supply.
Stewart Nhamburo
We need a holding midfielder. I missed Gidiza on the field.
