Noliwe Mhlophe, a 36-year-old fashion designer specialising in Afrocentric designs has been designing since 2014 and has had the opportunity to create outfits for some prominent individuals in Bulawayo.
She designs for both ladies and gentlemen, ranging from wedding gowns and lobola outfits to shirts and African attire.
“I do custom-made and ready-made designer wear for both women and men. Nolie B designs are a fusion of modern and African inspirations,” she said.
She has designed outfits for Allan Mjuru, Stacey Hall, Sipho Mazibuko, and Mzoe 7, among others.
“My designs were featured in the ‘I Wear My Culture’ lookbook, a project run by Gilmore Khumalo through the British Council, and a fashion film that was nominated in Melbourne, Germany, and South Africa,” said Noliwe.
“I draw my inspiration from bright colours, nature, shapes, and recycling. Over the years, I have perfected my skills by attending workshops and working as an intern at Edgars and Justine Clothing. I also hold a City and Guilds fashion certificate from Bulawayo Polytechnic College,” she said.
The designer said she has faced challenges in her line of business, such as financial difficulties and clients failing to pay adequately for the creativity invested.
She is grooming four young women in basic cutting and designing skills, a project she is working on with Hearts Touching Hearts, a local non-governmental organisation that empowers young women. She also provides models with links, platforms, and assistance with branding.
