Fatal accidents as fathers run over kids

The tragic accidents occurred within two days this week.
Police said the incidents occurred between Monday and Tuesday in Chitungwiza, Mutare and Beitbridge.

Acting National Traffic police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incidents.
He said in Beitbridge, a father killed his three-year-old son while reversing the vehicle on Monday afternoon.

“The child was at the back of the vehicle where he was knocked down by the car and he died on the spot,” Asst Insp Chakanza said.
In Mutare, he said another four-year-old child was again knocked down by his father who was reversing.

A father accidentally killed his own 19-month-old son while reversing his car at a family driveway on Monday morning in Chitungwiza.
According to a family spokesman Mr Welly Matinyadza, it appeared the child was following his father when the incident occurred at house number 20141 Unit G Extension.

The father, Mr Itai Matinyadza knocked down his son Michael while reversing unaware that he was following him.
Michael later died at Chitungwiza Central Hospital after sustaining serious head injuries.

Asst Insp Chakanza urged parents to always check at the back of their vehicles before reversing their vehicles.
According to the law, drivers should check of any children, animals and any other obstacles at the back of their vehicles before reversing.

The three fathers are likely to appear in court soon facing culpable homicide charges.
At least 205 drivers countrywide are facing culpable homicide charges after they were involved in accidents which resulted in the deaths of several people this year.
Police statistics show that between January and March this year, 416 people were killed in 315 fatal accidents that were recorded countrywide.
