A 70-YEAR-OLD man from Glaudina Park in Harare narrowly escaped death after his son launched a brutal attack on him in the middle of the night.

The elderly man, David Godfrey Mlilo, survived the attack by pretending to be dead after being viciously assaulted with a brick.

His son, Prince Nqobile Mlilo (27), appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa facing charges of attempted murder and was remanded in custody to November 5.

Prosecutor Mr Rufaro Chonzi alleged that the attack occurred on Monday at around 11pm when both father and son were at their home in Glaudina.

David had asked his son to take some medication as he had been complaining of a headache earlier in the evening.

After the request, David fell asleep on the sofa. However, he was abruptly awakened by a sharp blow to his head as Prince was attacking him with a brick.

The court heard that in a desperate bid to protect himself, David tried to shield his head with his hands, but Prince continued his relentless assault.

The elderly man eventually fell to the floor, and Prince climbed on top of him, continuing to strike him with the brick.

After realising that  his life was in danger, David began screaming for help, but his cries went unanswered.

In a last-ditch effort to save himself, he faked death. Prince then stopped the attack and reportedly said in Shona, “Uyu ndapedza naye, rega ndiende kumukadzi wake” (I’m done with him, let me go to his wife).

He then headed towards the bedroom where his mother was. Fortunately, the bedroom door was locked,so he could not  reach her.

A report was later filed at the police leading to Prince’s arrest.

David is currently hospitalised.
