A – MUTAWATAWA man Phenius Kasuso (36) has been arrested after running over his father, Mr Jona Kauso (58), with his commuter omnibus after a family dispute over the death of his younger brother.
The incident occurred on January 18 under Chief Chirinda in the Maramba area of Mutawatawa.
According to the police reports, sometime in September 2025, Phenius’s 17-year-old brother from Aviline Mine, Bindura, died.
Following the death, Jona suspected that Phenius and two other family members were involved in witchcraft and sought the intervention of Chief Chirinda to resolve the matter.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.
“Jona Kasuso reported the matter at Chief Chirinda’s court and it was scheduled for a hearing on January 18, 2026,” he said.
“At around 8 am, the Kasuso family arrived at Chief Chirinda’s traditional court, where tensions escalated when Phenius refused to see a local prophet as advised by the Chief.
“An altercation arose between Phenius and the rest of the family members.”
He said, Phenius pulled out a pistol and threatened to shoot his family members, and they ran for their dear lives.
“As he attempted to leave, Jona and another relative, Rebecca Kasuso, stood in front of the vehicle to block his path,” Comm Nyathi said.
“Phenius suddenly drove his vehicle and struck Jona, dragging him for about 10 meters before fleeing the scene.
“Jona sustained a fractured left leg, head bruises, and a broken right rib. He was rushed to Mutawatawa District Hospital for medical attention, where his condition was confirmed serious and he was pronounced dead at around 11:40 pm.”
A report was filed through ZRP Mutawatawa, and officers attended the scene, resulting in Phenius’s arrest.
Comm Nyathi called on families to seek peaceful ways to resolve disputes.
“This tragic incident highlights the importance of addressing family conflicts without resorting to violence.
“Phenious is assisting the police with the investigation and is being charged with murder and contravening the Firearms Act.”
