FATIMA High School athletes will headline the Lupane District track and field athletics competition, which kicks off today and continues tomorrow at AMR St Paul’s Amandlethu High School.
The school, crowned Jotsholo Zone champions two weeks ago, is expected to field a strong team, including Nkosinothabo Ngwenya, the reigning National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) and COSSASA champion in the Under-18 girls’ 1500m race, as well as Nhlalwenhle Nyoni. This is according to a report by the school’s in-house online publication, Fatima Times.
Nyoni was recently crowned the ZIMFEP 3 000m champion. Nkosinothabo, whose personal best in the 1 500m is 4 minutes 56 seconds, will battle it out with Zanele Moyo of Siamagoza Zone in the Under-18 girls’ category.
Jotsholo Zone consists of five schools: Fatima, Jotsholo, Mlamuli, Gwayi, and Nhlahla.
The two-day athletics event will feature six zones: Jotsholo, Gomoza, Zwangendaba, Mabhikwa, Siamagoza, and the host zone, St Paul’s.
Fatima has several notable athletes in its ranks, including Tinashe Muzuva (Under-16 sprinter), Blessing Gandiwa (Under-18, 100m), and Lwandile Mathe (Under-16, 100m).
Jotsholo Zone, the reigning district champions, are the favourites to retain the title.
For the first time, the athletics meet is being held outside Mabhikwa and Fatima. It will also serve as a selection platform for the district team that will compete in the provincial finals at Manjolo High School in Binga next month.
“It goes without saying that Jotsholo Zone will not get victory on a silver platter. The epic battle will be between them and their nemesis and perennial campaigners, Zwangendaba Zone, who will be fighting for bragging rights,” reads part of the Fatima Times report.
Jotsholo Zone manager, Givens Matsika, said his athletes are more than ready to defend their title.
