MWENEZI, Zimbabwe — A security crew from Fawcett Security Company is under investigation following the theft of $20,000 in cash during a transit operation on October 16, 2024.
The cash box was reported missing under strange circumstances while the team was transporting it from Beitbridge to Mutare. The four-man crew picked up two passengers, a man and a woman along the way.
Company and security measures do not allow passengers on cash-in-transit vans. After dropping the man at Rutenga and the woman at Ngudu, the crew discovered the cash box had vanished.
It could not be ascertained how big the cash box was. The crew consisting of Ben Nyambi (52), Chifunde Jephita (42) Brine Matsena (30) and Tapiwa Confidence (27) returned to Rutenga and made a police report.
Investigators from CID Mwenezi promptly arrested the four men as prime suspects, while investigations into the issue are underway.
National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.
“The vehicle was transporting cash from Beitbridge to Mutare. Along the way, the cash-in-transit crew offered a lift to two unknown passengers at Lutumba Service Centre and Machiloni, Beitbridge,” said Comm Nyathi.
“The passengers were later dropped off at Rutenga and Ngundu. Upon arrival at Ngundu, the crew discovered that a locked metal cash box containing the cash was missing.”
The incident occurs barely two weeks after another private security company, Safeguard Security, lost US$4 million in a cash-in-transit van heist in Bulawayo.
Comm Nyathi appealed for information to assist in the investigations, urging anyone with information to contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 70 3631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197 or report at any nearest police station.
