FBC Building Society has completed the construction of a biodigester expected to benefit about 200 households at Empumalanga Phase 4 in Hwange, marking a major milestone in efforts to provide sustainable and modern infrastructure in the developing settlement.

The biodigester, which forms part of ongoing servicing works at the new residential development in the coal mining town, is set to provide an environmentally friendly waste management solution while creating opportunities for future biogas use by beneficiary households.
At the same time, FBC Building Society has commenced works to open up an access road into the area, a development expected to improve mobility for residents, service providers and construction teams.
The Hwange Local Board said the developments were a positive step towards creating a properly planned and sustainable settlement.

In a statement, the local authority said the biodigester project demonstrates the importance of integrating climate-smart infrastructure into new housing developments.
“The completion of the biodigester marks a significant milestone in improving sanitation services within the settlement. The facility is expected to benefit approximately 200 households from the 764 stands under development while promoting environmentally sustainable waste management practices,” said the local authority.
It said the project would not only improve sanitation but also lay the groundwork for possible future biogas utilisation by residents.
“The initiative reflects a practical commitment towards modern infrastructure development that responds to environmental and public health considerations,” said the local authority.
The local authority also welcomed the opening up of the access road, saying improved accessibility was critical in accelerating development within the area.
“Opening the road network will greatly improve access to Empumalanga Phase 4 for residents, emergency services, utility providers and other stakeholders involved in the development process. Improved mobility is an important component in the growth of organised and sustainable communities,” said HLB.
The residential area is one of the expanding suburbs in Hwange as demand for housing continues to rise.
Authorities said the latest developments by FBC Building Society were expected to enhance living conditions and support orderly urban expansion through improved infrastructure and service delivery.
