ZIMBABWE Golf Professional Association president, Simon Chigorimbo, believes the FBC Zim Open Golf Tournament is going to be big and explosive as the purse price has increased.
It is now set at US$150 000.
The tournament is set for May 4-7 at Royal Harare with the qualifiers set for May 1.
Chigorimbo believes local players have been working hard preparing for the prestigious event and hopes to see one of them lifting the trophy.
Players like Visitor Mapwanya, Ryan Cairns, Nyasha Muyambo, Biggy Chibvuri, Ben Follett-Smith, and Kieran Vincent have in the past performed well in tournaments of this magnitude.
“It’s going to be an interesting one this year. Our players have been working so hard throughout the year preparing for this big event,” said Chigorimbo.
“It will be nice to get a local winning the FBC Zimbabwe Open. “Our players have shown that they have what it takes to be Champions by winning on local and foreign turf.
“We already have some of our members who have done well and are still raising our Zimbabwean flag high in tournaments of this magnitude and we are expecting them to lead the way.”
He added:
“We have to take note of the big purse at stake, it attracts a strong field so it will be exciting to see our locals battling it out with some regional and international players.
“Of course, the pressure will always be there, just like at home when you have visitors you always want to put your best foot forward.
“The players are ready to be on the battlefield.
“I am confident we will again have more Zimbabweans making the cut just like we did last year.
“We are also looking forward to having more Zimbabwean guys getting through during the qualifiers,” he said.
