UNITED Kingdom-based rider, Skye Davidson, reclaimed the Zimbabwe National Road Cycling gong after winning gold at the event held along Plumtree Road in Bulawayo last weekend.
The last time she won the national title was back in 2019 where she finished in pole position ahead of Stacey Hyslop (silver) and younger sister, Cami Davidson, taking the bronze medal.
At this year’s event in Plumtree, Davidson was flanked on the podium by Helen Mitchell in second place and Priscilla Mashamba winning a bronze medal.
“It was an absolute dream to take the national title on Saturday.
“It’s been four years since I’ve been able to compete in these championships and since I last took the title, a lot has happened.
“It’s been a tough journey for me finding my way and trying to establish myself on the international and UK stage and I’ve not been able to come home.
“Last year was particularly frustrating for me and after a long winter spent in Scotland training every day, I’ve finally made it to the racing season where things are kicking off.
“I’m racing with an amazing team in the UK who inspire and encourage me.”
Davidson added that no victory was sweeter than winning at home.
“I managed to get to the African Championships in February and now this is the best way I can think of, to really put my years of hard work in getting where I am today, to good use.”
She added:
“To be able to come home and ride with my brothers and sisters here, and hopefully help to inspire new generations of Zimbabwean cyclists, is amazing.
“Now, I’m going to be able to wear the national champion’s jersey overseas — what a privilege.”
“In the greater scheme of things, this has given me a huge confidence boost in my own ability and also in my sense of purpose.
“Cycling is a huge part of my life and so is racing for Zimbabwe and being welcomed, when I come back here, does a lot to encourage my passion for it when I’m far away and feeling like giving up.”
