work for a double assault in the Premiership and Champions League, will have their first test against the Mighty Bulls.
Soccer Star of the Year finalist Allen Gahadzikwa, who helped Motor Action lift their first league title in 2010, will come face-to-face with his former teammates after crossing the floor to join the ambitious miners.
FC Platinum secretary, Philmon Muvengwa, yesterday said his team will test their pre-season preparations, for the first time, using this special occasion tomorrow.
“It is our wish and pleasure as FC Platinum to join the nation in commemorating the President’s birthday,” said Muvengwa.
“As you know we recruited some more players during the off-season and the idea is to make the team gel during this period.
“So playing in the Bob ’88 (Super Cup) is just like taking an exam where you need to gauge how far you have gone with the groundwork, although the real thing will come when the league begins.
“We played some practice matches in Kariba against some lower division sides but that is nothing to write home about.
“The good thing is that we started our preparations early because we are also taking part in the Champions League and we hope by the time we play our first games we will be fine.”
FC Platinum and Motor Action are featuring in the tournament for the first time after the organisers doubled the number of participating teams that took part in the inaugural edition last year.
Harare giants Dynamos and CAPS United clashed in a one-off final last year which the Glamour Boys won 3-2 and walked away US$45 000 richer.
But the tournament has encompassed the league’s top four finishers from last season with Dynamos engaging Hwange in the other semi-final on Sunday in Bulawayo.
Motor Action coach, Joey Antipas, said his Mighty Bulls were looking forward to the opportunity to assess their team ahead of their first leg encounter in the Caf Confederation Cup preliminary round tie against South Africa’s Black Leopards.
Antipas said he was expecting an improvement from the team’s performance against a weakened CAPS United.
“I was pleased by that training game but a lot of work still needs to be done.
“It’s early days but the guys are gradually getting fitter.
“The good thing is that everyone is enthusiastic and we are putting a lot of hard work at training,” said Antipas.
