AS the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season edges towards the halfway mark, all eyes will be on Mandava Stadium this afternoon where Midlands rivals FC Platinum and Hardrock square off in a potentially explosive miners’ derby.
The match brings together two sides with very different histories but the same ambition — to finish the season among the league’s top teams.
Hardrock arrive in Zvishavane as surprise pacesetters in the league. Under coach Kelvin Kaindu, the gold miners have enjoyed an impressive campaign and currently sit at the top of the table with 31 points from 15 matches. They have won nine games, drawn four and lost only twice, while scoring 24 goals and conceding just seven.
Their rise has been driven by quick attacking football, solid defending and clinical finishing in front of goal.
Last weekend, Hardrock sent another strong message to the rest of the league after beating Simba Bhora 3-0 at Chahwanda Stadium. Washington Navaya once again delivered up front, while the Eswatini duo of Neliswa Dlamini and Sambulo Simelane combined well with Donald Mudadi to trouble the opposition defence throughout the match.
Kaindu’s squad is full of experience and attacking quality. Mudadi remains the creative force in midfield, while Tinotenda Muringai and Munashe Bamara continue to stretch defences with their pace and movement.
There will also be extra attention on former FC Platinum defender Misheck Ngwenya, who now turns out for Hardrock against the club where he made his name.
Despite their fine form this season, Mandava Stadium has not always been a happy hunting ground for Hardrock. Last season, under then coach Calvin Maphosa and advisor Luke Masomere, the club struggled against FC Platinum’s Under-19 side in the Central Region Division One League. Hardrock managed to win at home but could only settle for a goalless draw at Mandava.
Those memories will surely motivate Kaindu’s men going into today’s encounter.
FC Platinum may be sitting in seventh place with 23 points from 16 matches, but they remain one of the league’s most respected and dangerous sides.
After an inconsistent start to the season, Pure Platinum Play appear to be slowly rediscovering their rhythm. Their most recent outing saw them grind out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Triangle United at Gibbo Stadium following a disappointing home defeat to Herentals.
Coach Joel Luphahla understands Midlands football very well from his time at TelOne and knows exactly what to expect in a derby of this nature. His side drew 2-2 with TelOne at Mandava earlier in the campaign, while Kaindu guided Hardrock to a convincing 3-0 win over the same opposition at Ascot Stadium.
FC Platinum’s strength has often been their ability to manage difficult matches and find results even when not playing at their best.
Jarrison Selemani continues to be one of the team’s key attacking players, capable of producing moments of quality, while defender Nickson Nyasulu will play a major role in trying to contain Hardrock’s dangerous attack led by Navaya, Mudadi, Muringai and Bamara.
The battle within the battle promises to make the derby even more exciting.
Kaindu may still be new to Midlands football, but he has already shown that he can handle pressure. Luphahla, meanwhile, knows the demands that come with coaching FC Platinum, especially at Mandava where the home crowd can create a difficult atmosphere for visiting teams.
Hardrock’s Eswatini duo of Dlamini and Simelane are expected to test Platinum’s disciplined defence, while Navaya’s sharp finishing could prove decisive in a tight contest.
For Hardrock, this is another chance to prove they are genuine title contenders and not simply early-season surprise leaders.
For FC Platinum, it is an opportunity to remind the league why they dominated Zimbabwean football for so many years and to reassert themselves in the title race.
With pride, points and provincial bragging rights all at stake, supporters can expect a tense, tactical and hard-fought Midlands derby at Mandava Stadium.
One thing is certain — Mandava rarely produces ordinary derbies.
