DEFENDING champions, FC Platinum remained on top of the log in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League when they overcame Chapungu in the Midlands derby played at Mandava Stadium yesterday.
Zimbabwe Warriors defender, Lawrence Mhlanga put the two times in a row champions ahead with 11 minutes played. From a corner kick taken by youngster Panashe Mutimbanyoka, Chapungu goalkeeper Talbert Shumba spilled the ball and Mhlanga finished it off. Norman Mapeza’s men managed to hold onto that lead till the end.
With yesterday’s win, FC Platinum had moved to 31 points, two ahead of second placed Chicken Inn and five in front of Caps United in third spot.
At the final whistle Mapeza was content with the result and hailed his men for a good game despite tinkering with some positional changes for his stars.
“We did well in the first half but the second half it was bad. I am happy the boys keep soldiering on. There has also been a number of shifts in position but I am happy we keep doing better,” said Mapeza.
Chapungu coach Rodwell Dhlakama felt his men gifted the opponents maximum points.
“This is worrying because we lost a game we dominated. We had an awful start to the game and I must say we gave them an early Christmas present of a goal.
“The second half was better and we created many chances which we failed to convert but I am disappointed and I hope we will rise and start winning again,” said Dhlakama.
