FC Platinum target Danny Phiri

CLUBLESS former Chicken Inn captain Danny Phiri is reportedly on the radar of Castle Lager Premier Soccer League defending champions FC Platinum.

Phiri was released by South African DStv Premiership side Golden Arrows following the expiry of his contract at the end of June.

A source close to Phiri’s camp hinted to Chronicle Sport that the former Warriors’ skipper is being targeted by the FC Platinum technical staff, whose head Norman Mapeza is a known admirer of the midfield enforcer.

However, Mapeza and club spokesperson Chido Chizondo yesterday rubbished the reports, with the coach saying he knew nothing about the matter, the spokesperson saying she hadn’t heard about talk of Phiri coming to Zvishavane.

“I don’t know about that,” said Mapeza.

Sources, however, insisted that Phiri, who can only play for Pure Platinum Play in the African Safari if they qualify for the group stages of the tournament, has been informed of the club’s interest in him, but just like in the Diamond Trust Bank of Tanzania deal, the 2015 Soccer Star of the Year was yet to make a decision on whether or not to join the Zvishavane-based side.

“While there hasn’t been anything formal yet, the two camps have held some talks, but obviously the final decision lies with the man (Phiri) himself,” said the source.

FC Platinum are in action on the weekend of September 10-12 against GD Sagrada Esperanca of Angola in the Caf Champions League preliminary round.
