WITH over a decade in the music industry, local DJ “Feel G” (real name Philip Phiri), founder and curator of the popular House in CBD movement, has been steadily reshaping Zimbabwe’s underground House music, creating a space where both seasoned and up-and-coming DJs can thrive.
What started as an intimate DJ-led gathering in 2022 has grown into a cultural mainstay. With over 60 editions under his belt, Feel G has turned House in CBD into more than just an event. It has become a movement, one rooted in mentorship, collaboration and people. His efforts have not been in vain, as more and more DJs are breaking into the mainstream, thanks to his initiative.
“House in CBD was founded with a clear vision to unearth and showcase the immense talent within Zimbabwe’s House music community that often goes unnoticed,” he said.
Now, Feel G is stepping into a new chapter, through what he has dubbed, House in the Burbs. This will see the movement venture into the eastern suburbs, starting today.
The first event will be held at a popular Bulawayo restaurant, known for showcasing live bands on Sundays. Here, Feel G will officially launch House in the Burbs, bringing the same spirit of inclusion and musical excellence to new neighbourhoods and fresh audiences.
“This expansion is intentional. It’s not just about spreading the music. It’s about building culture in different corners of the city, making House music accessible to everyone,” DJ Feel G said.
He said this will be followed by more upcoming editions and promised more than just great vibes, but musical storytelling.
“From soulful deep House at sundown to peak-time progressive sets and Afro House climaxes, each line-up is curated with care,” he said.
“We want the music to flow like a journey, not a playlist. That’s why every DJ is handpicked, for their style, their story and their ability to move people.”
At today’s event, emerging names will share the stage with veterans. The line-up features Adrean Snowy, Yugoe, Slim T, Ndoe, Zulu DHM, Induna and Feel G himself.
Reflecting on his career, Feel G said he feels success is not measured by chart-toppers or viral sets, it is measured in moments — the first-time DJ, who finds their groove, the crowd that dances till dawn and the artistes who blossom under guidance. Mentored by industry trailblazers like Ryan Synth, Victor Bravo and Mduduzi Mdlongwa, Feel G is determined to pay that mentorship forward.
“The real win is watching someone you believed in, rise. To see the House in CBD become a launchpad for so many voices, that’s what I’ll remember.
“Reaching over 60 editions, all centred on uplifting other DJs, has been incredibly rewarding. It’s one thing to achieve personal milestones, but to create a platform that genuinely fosters growth for so many other artistes, that’s a different level of fulfillment.”
In an industry often driven by ego and profit, Feel G stands out for his community-first ethos. He sees music not just as entertainment, but as therapy, mentorship and movement-building.
“House in CBD and now House in the Burbs aren’t just events, they’re ecosystems. They push me creatively, keep me grounded and remind me of music’s power to unite, uplift and inspire.”
