FEMALE hip-hop artist, Banshee, has called for more female engagement in the music industry and a departure from fixed stereotypes.
She believes women should be encouraged to shine in their multiplicity and not be restricted by a fixed notion of what they should be like.
She also suggested that women should be given a platform in the production processes behind the scenes instead of just being seen on stage. Banshee was recently nominated for the Zim Hip-Hop Awards and is pleased to see more female MCs emerging in a diverse industry that is becoming intentionally creative.
She is optimistic about the potential of women in the industry to bear fruit in the future.
“The biggest challenge has to be the fact that the Zim hip-hop and rap scene is predominantly male. There is a need for more female engagement in the industry and women have to be encouraged to thrive in their multiplicity.
“Gatekeeping should be done away with so that upcoming female artists may have a chance to showcase their talents on big platforms,” she said.
On being nominated for the Zim Hip-Hop Awards, Banshee said:
“There have been some commendable strides made by various women in the industry to solidify the feminine essence and I am so honoured to be a part of that growing movement.
“This in itself is very exciting and I am more than certain that the womanist potential in this industry can really bear fruit.
“The future is gleaming with boundless possibilities and that is something everyone must look forward to.”
