LEONARD Dembo’s daughter, Fenistia Tazvivinga, reckons her experiment to fuse her late father’s songs with contemporary beats is paying off.
Better known as Fenny Dembo, the South Africa-based songstress has done remixes of “Chengeto”, “Wadane N’anga” and “Chapter”, much to the delight of fans.

In an interview with The Herald Arts, Fenny said fans have been embraced the experiment.

“The feedback from fans has been overwhelmingly positive,” she said.

“Many have expressed their appreciation for the way I have honoured my father’s legacy while bringing a fresh perspective to his music.

“It is heartening to see how his work continues to resonate with people and how they welcome my contribution to it,” she said.

Fenny, who has been receiving rave reviews for her efforts to experiment with contemporary beats, added: “I have focused on several of his most iconic tracks in this initiative.

“My goal has been to respect the original essence while infusing it with a contemporary sound that reflects both my musical influences and the current trends in the industry.”

She, however, conceded that being the daughter of a legend comes with a lot of pressure.

“Being the daughter of a legend certainly comes with its own set of challenges, but I see it as an incredible privilege rather than a burden,” she said.

“I handle the pressure by staying true to myself and my artistic vision. I am committed to upholding my father’s legacy while also carving out my own path in the music industry.

“His work continues to inspire me, and I strive to make him proud by putting my very best into everything I do.”

Dembo died on April 9, 1996, aged 37. And, 28 years after his death, Dembo’s music is still very popular.

His two sons – Tendai and Morgan – have been doing their best to keep the music going.
