“Despite preparations for the 2012-2013 agricultural season, we are still owed a lot of money which is in the region of US$40 million by stakeholders.
“If the customers with outstanding payments do not pay up, we will not be able to meet the season’s demand for fertiliser,” he said.
The meteorological department has said the country will receive normal to above normal rainfall in the next farming season.
Mr Kachere said the seasonal demand for fertiliser is about 300 000 tonnes but this might not be achieved because of a shortage of funds to produce the product.
“In stock we have 50 00 tonnes so if we get the funding we will be able to produce enough for the season,” he said.
In recent years, the country has been facing shortages of fertiliser because of erratic power cuts that have put the agriculture season into disarray.
This has also seen farmers receiving inputs late into the season. Government has also been blamed for late distribution of agricultural inputs under State-sponsored farming programmes. — New Ziana.
