According to police statistics, 671 people were injured in 899 accidents recorded during the same period.
The number of accidents rose from 799 since last week. Police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri yesterday confirmed the statistics adding that they had impounded 1 930 unworthy vehicles.
He said police had issued 74 371 tickets for various traffic offences.
Supt Phiri attributed most of the accidents to speeding and negligence.
“Most of the accidents were caused by speeding and driver inattention,” he said.
Nine-eighty people were killed while 1 090 others were injured in 1 119 accidents recorded during the Christmas and New Year holidays last year.
About 2 909 vehicles were impo-unded during the same period.
Meanwhile, Government has urged motorists, particularly public transport operators, to adhere to traffic rules to reduce road carnage.
Harare had recorded the highest number of accidents with 202 by December 23 this year, most of them said to have been caused by kombi drivers.
The situation prompted the police to intensify a joint blitz with the council on kombis and vendors. During the operation, kombis without proper documents were not allowed into the City Centre while some were impo-unded.
The operation was aimed at decongesting the city centre. Last week, police said it had put in place various strategies to ensure a crime and accident free festive season.
Police Commissioner General Au-gustine Chihuri indicated that Zimbabwe had continued to lose lives during the festive season as a result of road carnage.
He challenged public transporters to observe the sanctity of life by ensuring that vehicles were roadworthy.
