INNOCENT Benza is about to turn 54 and the veteran forward continues to rewrite the script — on the pitch and in the locker room.
Benza is an influential figure at Herentals, both as a player and as a source of inspiration.
According to his coach Paul Benza, the country’s oldest top-flight footballer is still an invaluable asset.
“He provides excellent leadership and motivational qualities, making it easier for us,” said coach Paul Benza.
“He has a deep understanding of the game which is very helpful.
“Being part of the team, he plays a double role, giving instructions to players while also playing at the same time. He is more than a player to us, and his leadership qualities have been key to our success.”
Turning 54 on Monday, Benza continues to defy age and challenge norms.
While some question his role, others see him as a symbol of endurance and passion in Zimbabwean football.
Last season, Herentals surprised many by finishing as the highest-ranked Harare-based team, ending fifth, above both Dynamos and CAPS United.
Now, coach Paul wants even more.
“We want to do better than we did last year, we will fight till the end to finish in the top four, though we are not under any pressure to do so,” he said.
They trail leaders MWOS by seven points.
“I am happy with the squad, all the players are giving it their all. But I believe they have much more to offer if they continue working hard, and in doing so, we will achieve our target,” he said.
Herentals will host former champions Ngezi Platinum Stars tomorrow at Rufaro.
“We are going to give it our best as we always do. For us, every game is important and we strive to give it our all,” he said.
