TWELVE striking pieces by renowned Zimbabwean artists — Barry Lungu, Tonderai Mujuru and Keith Zenda — are being exhibited in Berlin, Germany.
German artist Nicoleta Albei-Wigger has provided an elegant and accessible setting for this cultural exchange.
Nicoleta, known for her specialisation in large-scale abstract artworks often reaching sizes of 2×2 or 2×3 metres, presented an extensive collection of her signature pieces alongside five innovative NFTs, showcasing her versatility in both traditional and digital media.
The exhibition, which started last Friday, was jointly organised by Swiss-Zim Heritage Gallery, Artsy.net, and Nicoleta Gallery, bringing together a diverse array of artworks from Zimbabwean and European artists.
The event has attracted around 120 enthusiastic visitors, including representatives from the Zimbabwean Embassy in Berlin, who recognised the importance of this cross-cultural artistic dialogue.
In an interview with Zimpapers Entertainment Hub, Zenda said he was grateful for the support by the Zimbabwean Embassy in Germany.
“We were supported by the Zimbabwean Embassy in Germany which also provided the Zimbabwe national fabric to be part of the exhibition.”
Mujuru said it was important for him to represent his country on the global stage.
“It’s an honour to represent Zimbabwe in Berlin,” he said.
The Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality said the ongoing exhibition highlights the rich cultural heritage of Zimbabwe.
“As part of efforts in promoting tourism through the creative industry, the Zimbabwean Embassy, in partnership with Nicoleta Gallery and Swiss-Zim Heritage Gallery, is showcasing the power of cultural exchange through a weeklong art exhibition in the vibrant city of Berlin.
“Featuring 12 striking pieces by Zimbabwean artists Barry Lungu, Tonderai Mujuru, and Keith Zenda, alongside Nicoleta’s abstract works, the exhibition celebrates the fusion of African storytelling and European creativity.
“With over 120 attendees on opening day and global access via Artsy.net, the event positions Zimbabwe as a culturally rich and immersive tourist destination, inviting the world to experience Zimbabwe through the lens of art.
“This exhibition is important because it strengthens Zimbabwe’s cultural diplomacy, opens international markets for local artists and demonstrates how art can be a powerful driver of tourism and national identity.”
Guests were treated to a buffet and a selection of drinks, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for art enthusiasts to explore the diverse artworks on display.
Visitors were captivated by the contrast between Nicoleta’s expansive, expressive abstract pieces and the powerful, narrative-driven works of the Zimbabwean artists. Lungu’s dynamic compositions, Mujuru’s emotive scenes and Zenda’s intricate storytelling sparked engaging discussions among the attendees.
“This successful exhibition marks the beginning of an ongoing cultural dialogue between Zimbabwe and Europe.
“With plans for three more exhibitions at Nicoleta Gallery this year, the gallery aims to offer a platform for greater artistic exchange, allowing visitors to experience an even broader spectrum of Zimbabwean artistry,” said the statement from the Zimbabwean Embassy.
