LOCAL Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe has appealed to Chiefs to double efforts to end drug and substance abuse as well as child marriages.
He made the call at the installation of Mr Venon Muringani as substantive Chief Maromo.
“Chiefs are custodians of our culture and values. In that vein, I appeal to you to work around the clock to eradicate drug and substance abuse in our communities,” he said.
“Drug abuse is destroying our children as well as their future and Chiefs need to be at the forefront in eradicating this danger. It is not in our culture to abuse drugs and substances.
“Also, as you are aware, President Mnangagwa is on record, strongly condemning the habit of child marriages. Again it is your duty as chiefs to ensure the issue of child marriages is not to be tolerated in our society.”
The installation was held at Makumimavi Primary School in Chivhu today.
The event was graced by Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona, Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera, Health and Child Care
Minister Douglas Mombeshora, Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Advocate Itayi Ndudzo, National Council of Chiefs president Senator Mtshane Khumalo, chiefs and other traditional leaders from across the country.
