POLICE have been urged to fight the scourge of corruption in the public sector in order  to safeguard the nation’s economic growth, a senior government official has said.

Speaking during a graduation ceremony of police officers at Ntabazinduna Training Depot yesterday, Home Affairs Deputy Minister, Cde Ziyambi Ziyambi said corruption in the public sector was threatening economic growth and caused untold suffering to Zimbabweans.

“It’s apparent that crime in Zimbabwe, particularly economic crime, has caused and continues to inflict untold suffering to our people.
“Of major concern is the rate at which the scourge of corruption has permeated the public sector to the extent of threatening to stifle progress in key sectors of our economy,” said Cde Ziyambi.

He  said police as part of their mandate, must work towards fighting crime such as corruption which he said  was hindering implementation of the nation’s economic blueprint, Zim-Asset.

“I must hasten to point out that one of the imperatives to the success of Zim-Asset is an effective and efficient law enforcement agency which has the requisite competences not only to detect crime and arrest offenders but also to prevent the occurrence of such cancerous crimes as corruption,” said Deputy Minister Ziyambi.

He encouraged the recruits to resist evil people bent on corrupting them by paying them bribes.

He lauded the police force for contributing to Zim-Asset through its on-going Results Based Management (RBM) training programme, saying it was a vital management tool.
The graduation ceremony was attended by Commissioner General of Police, Cde Augustine Chihuri and other senior service chiefs.
A total of 503 recruits graduated, comprising 273 males and 230 females after completing a six-month training course.
