Fight or Hide

Wrestling matches were something that bound us together in our neighbourhood, back in the day. We especially enjoyed the fenced ring matches, where several wrestlers fought inside a fenced ring and the winner was the one who managed to climb out of the very high walls. Anyone who tried to climb out was collectively attacked.

At one point, when Bret Hart, one of our favourite wrestlers was trying to climb up, he was attacked and he surely fell down. When he got up, obviously wounded, he started fighting, but it was with a focus to climb up again. It took him a great deal of time and great effort in fighting and wadding off the stiff resistance but through persistence and determination, he finally made it to the top and out of the ring, winning the match.

Yes, wrestling may just have been entertainment, but we live with its principles every day.

It all starts with the realisation that you have a unique purpose in this world. Some call it a seed of greatness within you and indeed, greatness is what you achieve or feel inside once you are able to fulfil that purpose. Some are destined to be great artists, whose pieces of work bring light to the world. Some are destined to be leaders, corporate players, sports people, service providers, care givers — anything at all that enhance the lives of others, contributing positively to society. Anyone can climb up and reach the top.

But then it does not always come on a silver platter. It would be delusional to disregard the fact that there will always be negative forces against you, as you try to climb up the ladder from the ground littered with mediocrity to your purpose. Sometimes they come in the form of unfavourable situations and circumstances. Most of the times, however, the negative forces come in the form of people: through their thoughts, words and actions regarding you. But don’t take it personal . . . it is just a distraction meant to dissuade you from progressing up.

Quite hilarious, during the wrestling matches, there were other wrestlers in the same fenced ring who never made any attempt to climb out, mainly for fear of receiving a collective attack. Their only purpose became that of deterring those who were climbing up.

Are you also not among those who are hiding in the midst of the majority, too fearful to stand out in pursuit of your purpose lest you attract bitter opposition? John A Shedd said, “A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.”

Is what you are right now all that you were created to be? Have you reduced your life purpose to that of attacking those climbing on to their own greatness? I hope not.

Do not fall in the trap of thinking you are too young or too old to fulfil your purpose. One wise person once said that if you are eighteen years old and are destined to live up to twenty-two, then you are old. If you are sixty and are going to live up to ninety then you are still pretty young. Fact is, no one knows when their time will be up, so its best you live each day like it was your last.

Be the best that you can be each living moment of your life. For you to succeed in climbing up towards your greatness, you may need to detach your thoughts and feelings from the negative forces around you and attach them to the realisation of your goal. Can you rise from the present concept of yourself and your surroundings to a higher, more evolved version of yourself in a new setup? Some of us are chained down by memories or records of past failures. Can you make a shift and start thinking of how it would feel like to achieve you life purpose? Those wonderful feelings will be the magnetic forces that pull you up as you work towards that great destiny.
