In Filabusi, UGodlwayo Omnyama, a region known for its rich history and strong community spirit in Matabeleland South Province, one local miner is making a significant difference by investing in the lives of ordinary people.
Through his organisation JCK Life Changers, miner Alloyd Moxen has become a symbol of community empowerment, demonstrating how success in the mining sector can be used to uplift the communities where miners operate.
Founded in South Africa by Moxen, JCK Life Changers is a community empowerment and philanthropic organisation dedicated to assisting vulnerable members of society. The organisation was born out of Moxen’s realisation that many communities, particularly in rural areas, require support in education, healthcare and economic opportunities.
One of the most notable initiatives by the organisation is its support for education. At Msithi Primary School in the Theleka area, 20 learners have benefited through the payment of school fees, allowing children from disadvantaged families to remain in school and continue their education.
Infrastructure development has also been a key focus. Through the efforts of Moxen and JCK Life Changers, roads in the Bekezela area of Filabusi have been rehabilitated, improving accessibility for villagers and making it easier for residents to travel and transport goods.
The organisation has also prioritised the welfare of senior citizens. In Silalatshane, many elderly people have received assistance ranging from basic necessities to direct support. In the health sector, JCK Life Changers has helped vulnerable community members by purchasing medication for those who cannot afford treatment.
According to Moxen, the initiative is driven by a deep belief that those who succeed must help uplift others.
“We created JCK Life Changers because we saw that many people in our communities needed support. Education, health and employment opportunities are important if we are to build stronger communities,” said Moxen.
Through various programmes focusing on education, employment, health support and youth empowerment, more than 2,000 people have benefited from Moxen’s interventions over the years.
His work echoes the national development philosophy championed by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, whose guiding mantra “Ilizwe Lakhiwa Ngabanikazi Balo”—a nation is built by its own people—encourages citizens to take responsibility for developing their communities.
Moxen says miners operating in Filabusi and across the country should embrace this philosophy by investing in the welfare of the communities where they conduct their operations.
“Mining companies operate within communities, and it is important that we give back. If every miner follows this path and supports education, healthcare and employment creation, our communities will grow and develop,” he said.
The initiative also aligns with Zimbabwe’s development agenda under National Development Strategy 2 (Zimbabwe), which emphasises inclusive economic growth, community empowerment and sustainable development within resource-rich regions.
Matabeleland South remains one of Zimbabwe’s important mining regions, with mining playing a crucial role in employment and economic activity. However, development experts note that community-driven initiatives by miners and mining companies can significantly accelerate rural development.
If more mining companies follow similar models of community engagement, several positive outcomes could be realised, including improved access to education, stronger healthcare systems, increased employment opportunities and improved infrastructure in rural mining communities.
Residents in Filabusi say the work being done by Moxen is already changing lives.
Community member Fikile Mguni praised the initiative, saying it has brought hope to many families.
“What Mr Moxen is doing is very important for our community. Supporting children with school fees and assisting the elderly shows real leadership. We thank him for the good work he is doing in Filabusi.”
Another resident, Felix Mhlanga, also applauded Moxen’s efforts.
“His contribution in this area is visible. Many families have benefited and we are grateful for the work he is doing for the community.”
For Elvis Phiri, the impact goes beyond charity and is creating long-term opportunities.
“A lot has been done in this area through employment, youth empowerment and job creation. Mr Moxen has shown that mining can uplift communities when leaders are committed to development.”
As Zimbabwe continues to harness the mining sector as a key driver of economic growth, the story of Alloyd Moxen and JCK Life Changers highlights how responsible mining and community investment can transform lives.
In Filabusi, UGodlwayo Omnyama, Moxen’s message to fellow miners remains clear: true success in mining must also mean uplifting the community.
