South Africa-based filmmaker and model Melgin Tafirenyika who rose to prominence with his debut film “I Will Marry Myself” which is currently being screened on channels including Africa Magic is due to release the sequel called “Sour Milk” next month.Tafirenyika is also a renowned model under Boss Models SA, has featured on a number of adverts including Emperors Palace billboard, Dunns Clothing SA, Econet Wireless TV advert and MTN, among others.
The new film, directed by award-winning Zimbabwean-born Myre Maramba and co-written by Nigerian-born Anderline Gold Ergbuhuzor, is an emotional story that exposes the dilemma women face in their lives starting from what society expects them to do before marriage as well as what they should do when they get married.
“Marriage should be a place of peace and happiness for every woman, with a wife expecting security, recognition and respect in society.
“However, my film seeks to debunk these ideals and look at what really happens in marriages of today as women are exposed to abuse and insecurity, with the eventual danger of being labelled Sour milk by men and the society at large,” said Tafirenyika.
The film stars former model James Jim and George Medupe who also features in “I will Marry Myself” as well as a host of Zimbabwean, Nigerian and South African actors.
Tafirenyika revealed that his first film has been bought by a UK-Based television channel which will air it on its African features channel, with more deals expected to be signed between the film maker and Nollywood distributors who want to serialise it in West Africa.
The model-cum-filmwriter completed his diploma in Drama and Performing Arts in Pretoria in 2010 and hopes to open a film school in Zimbabwe in order to tap into the country’s vast acting potential.
