Bindura Haulage Trucks has been fined US$300 for illegally operating a private telecommunications system in the border town.
The company, represented by its Beitbridge manager Everisto Chipanga (23), was convicted on its own plea of guilty for contravening a section of the Postal and Telecommunications Act.
It had been charged with operating the Icom (radio) system without a licence and Beitbridge resident magistrate Ms Gloria Takundwa ruled that the radio equipment be forfeited to the State.
Prosecutor Mr Jabulani Mberesi said Chipanga was charged with overseeing its operations in the border town.
He said the company acquired three Icom hand-held radios which were later used by Chipanga and his staff.
The matter came to light on July 18 this year at around 10am when police detectives acting on a tip-off, pounced on the company’s offices at No. 18 Living Waters complex.
They conducted a search of the premises and recovered three radios.
Chipanga was asked to provide legal documents authorising the company to operate such a telecommunication service, which he failed to do.
