Fire Seven . . . gone but not forgotten

Fungai Muderere
ON Tuesday, football lovers were reminded of a painful loss as it marked exactly one year since the death of former Warriors, Chicken Inn and Orlando Pirates striker Tendai “Fire Seven” Ndoro.

Ndoro, who died aged 40, was reportedly found dead in his Johannesburg apartment, leaving Zimbabwean football mourning the loss of one of its familiar faces.

For those who knew him beyond the football pitch, Ndoro was much more than a footballer.

He was a friend, a brother and a humble soul whose warmth, humour and generosity left lasting memories.

For this writer, his death was particularly painful. Ndoro and I shared a close bond that went beyond the traditional relationship between a journalist and a footballer. We shared conversations, jokes, football stories and moments that will remain treasured.

That closeness made his passing difficult to accept, and Tuesday’s anniversary once again brought back memories of the man behind the famous “Fire Seven” name.

Ndoro began making his mark in Zimbabwean football with Chicken Inn before his career took him to South Africa, where he played for Mpumalanga Black Aces, Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town. He also went on to represent the Warriors, earning recognition for his goal scoring ability and never-say-die approach.

But away from the stadiums, it was his character that stood out.

He was approachable, lively and genuine — the type of person whose presence could brighten a conversation. Those who were close to him will remember the laughter and the simple moments just as much as they remember his goals.

A year may have passed since his death, but time has done little to erase the memories.
For me, Fire Seven will always be more than the footballer whose name appeared on team sheets and headlines.

He was a friend.

He was family.

And he will forever be remembered.

Gone but not forgotten, Fire Seven.
One year on, we still remember you, we still talk about you and, most importantly, we still miss you.

Rest easy, my brother.
