LEADING mining equipment suppliers, Chaferfly Enterprises have re-affirmed their commitment to continue with the sponsorship of one of the country’s premium golf tournaments, the Hwange Open which was postponed last week. The Hwange Open was expected to tee off on Thursday last week but was postponed indefinitely.
However, the organisers have said the event will definitely be held before the end of the year.
There had been claims of sponsors deserting the golfing event as, two weeks before the initial dates, organisers could still not confirm the identity of their sponsors.
However, Chaferfly group managing director, Godfrey Nyakudya confirmed in a brief interview that his company was more than ready to continue with its relationship with the Open.
“We are still around, all we are waiting for is for them (organisers) to confirm the new dates to us then we will take it from there otherwise we have always been committed to the course,” said Nyakudya.
The soft spoken Bulawayo based businessman could however not be drawn into revealing the financial details of the deal.
Recently awarded the Order of Merit, the 18-hole golf course’s greens are reported to be at their best with golfers expected to enjoy their golf.
The greens once played host to the legendary Nick Price who went on to be the world’s number one golfer in his prime.
Bulawayo’s Brian Gondo is the defending champion in the professional division while Stephen Zero Simukai won in the amateur division and is expected to defend his title again this year.
Gondo will face stiff competition from the likes of Tongoona Charamba, Phillip Tshuma and Julius Kamalizeni among others.
