Firms urged to produce own electricity

Companies have lost production due to load shedding as the country has over the years failed to supply enough power for both domestic and industrial activity.

Energy and Power Development Permanent Secretary Mr Patson Mbiriri told New Ziana that the government would support power generation initiatives.

“As government we encourage industry and mines to provide own power supplies and increase energy generation and distribution.

“This will reduce demand on the national grid which has failed to provide power to both domestic and industry at the same time,” he said.

Mr Mbiriri said the government would improve the investment climate to attract partnerships in order to reduce the cost of implementing the power projects, which are capital intensive.

The government had since taken initiatives to encourage independent power producers (IPP) and other joint ventures, he said.

“We will facilitate public-private partnerships as a way of cushioning against lack of capital which is affecting industry,” said Mr Mbiriri.

The Government recently launched a national energy policy that seeks to guide the nation to achieving universal energy access by 2040.—New Ziana.
