A 35-year-old man from Kwekwe who lived with his 16-year-old niece as his wife was fined $300 for incest.
Brian Hlasera (35, ABOVE) and his 16-year-old niece (name withheld) both from Mbizo 9 suburb in Kwekwe, appeared before Kwekwe resident magistrate Taurai Manwere facing charges of incest.
The two pleaded guilty and magistrate Manwere sentenced Hlasera to pay a fine of $300 or spend three months in prison.
The magistrate sentenced Hlasera to an additional three months which were wholly suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
a�?You are a disgrace to the community. Instead of protecting your niece, you turned her into your wife. For such an uncalled for behaviour, you will have to pay a fine of US$300,a�? said Manwere.
The teen was also given a suspended sentence by Manwere, on condition of good behaviour and on the basis that she is just a juvenile, who could have been abused by the older Hlasera.
It was the Statea��s case that Hlasera and the juvenile who are first cousins were knowingly committing incest since March 28 this year at their home in Mbizo 9.
The court heard that on March 28, the two had sexual intercourse and began to stay together as husband and wife until April 4 when the matter was discovered by the girla��s mother.
The prosecutor told the court that the matter was reported to the police by the mother of the teenage niece leading to Hlaseraa��s arrest.
