The Albinism Dare to Dream Initiative (ADDI) has officially announced the first-ever Mr and Miss Albinism Africa pageant which is set to take place on 28 June at a venue yet to be confirmed.
The pageant, which will also feature a segment of the African Diversity Festival, aims to promote awareness, accessibility, and inclusion for people with albinism. The Festival will showcase African arts, designs, and crafts.
Themed “Shining in the Rainbow Africa”, the pageant will feature 31 contestants from 18 African countries.
Brenda Mudzimu, who is the Executive Director of ADDI, said their organisation was working in partnership with various African albinism organisations so that the event sees the light of the day.
“The Mr and Miss Albinism Africa pageant seeks to challenge negative perceptions and promote a positive image of people with albinism. We envision this event as an opportunity to promote and advocate for the rights of people with albinism, while also celebrating African diversity and culture.
“The event will provide a platform for contestants to showcase their talents, boost confidence, and beauty, while also advocating for their rights and inclusion. Contestants, aged between 18 and 35, will compete for the crowns,” said Mudzimu.
ADDI has successfully held similar events, including the Mr and Miss Albinism SADC pageant, which received support from partners such as NetOne Zimbabwe.
The organisers are appealing to the Government and corporate world to support their upcoming event.
“We need sponsors and partners who care enough to commit to the joint efforts to make this event a success,” said Mudzimu.
Albinism is a congenital condition characterised by the complete or partial absence of melanin production in the skin, hair, and eyes.
People with albinism often face social exclusion, stigma, and discrimination, which can lead to low self-esteem and limited opportunities.
