ROCMEDIA has produced a first ever Zimbabwean musical drama series titled Complicated.
The project is a drama series based on music, thus it is called a musical pilot. Solomon Mandaza who produced a movie titled Heritage is the brains behind the new project.
“Complicated is about Dwayne, a famous hip-hop artiste whose image is tarnished and loses everything after his manager Mr Bukks signed him off his label in favour of a struggling dancehall artiste RasTee, Dwayne’s number one enemy.
“RasTee is a brother to Vanessa, Dwayne’s girlfriend. The now struggling hip-hop artiste is helped to gain his previous status of being the king of music by engaging and collaborating with other artistes from different genres,” he explained.
He also revealed that Complicated focuses on the business side of music.
“In Zimbabwean music there are two trending genres, Zim dancehall and Zim hip-hop, so I thought of these two genres clashing as the other genre overpowers the other and how the clash of these giants will bring money to promoters. So basically Complicated is a musical drama that focuses on the business side of music, not just singing,” he said.
He also boasted of being the first Zimbabwean producer to come up with a musical pilot.
“I suppose it is the first of its kind because I have never heard of or watched a Zimbabwean film or drama about music. There might be people out there who have the idea of doing the same but they can’t pull it off the ground.
“In this pilot I worked with the likes of Thorne cast as Mr Bukks, a DJ and a producer at Skyz Metro FM, a seasoned hip-hop producer Senko as we RasTee, a dancehall artiste, Garreth “Skwib” Morris as Dwayne, Terrence Faizil, Lavas, 2Dope, YolandaVirgo, Shawty Pee, Bernard Panashe Marecha. The music industry will greatly benefit from this project because it will inspire a lot of Zimbabwean artistes to turn music into a business,” he said.
