First-half milk intake rises to 39 million litres

MILK intake by local processors grew to 38,9 million litres during the first six months of the year, up from 33 million litres in the comparative period last year, representing a 17 percent increase.

In its half-year results, Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE)-listed Dairibord indicated that it consumed 32 percent of the total intake by processors at 12,3 million litres.

“The Group has elevated initiatives for aggressive milk supply development for low-cost and high-volume milk production,” said Dairibord in the statement accompanying the group’s half-year performance to June 2022.

Last year, dairy farmers produced 79,6 million litres.

Farmers are presently investing to meet the annual demand of 130 million litres.

Overall, it is envisaged that aggressive milk production would help achieve competitive local milk prices, import substitution and present opportunities for export growth.
