From playing instruments in church to moving dance floors across Bulawayo and, more recently, Harare, DJ Sfiso, born Sifiso Yolanda Sibanda, has been steadily rising. Her journey has now earned her a nomination for Outstanding Club DJ at the Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAAs).
What makes the moment even more notable is who she is nominated alongside, seasoned heavyweights Kotwane Hikwa, Nospa and Mzoe. For a fairly new DJ on the scene, the recognition signals a breakthrough that many take years to achieve.
“This is my first time being nominated. It means a lot because I love what I do, and it shows that the arts sector is noticing my craft. I never thought I’d even get here,” she said.

While others have built their reputations over years, DJ Sfiso has quickly carved out her lane, becoming one of the few women consistently commanding nightlife spaces in a male-dominated arena.
For her, music is not just rhythm and entertainment; it is a cultural bridge.
“Music connects people emotionally and culturally, and as a DJ, I bring different sounds, genres and creative expressions together in one space,” she said. Her journey traces back to her church days, where she first saw how sound could unify people. Those early lessons evolved into virtual deejaying and sound design, skills that now shape her signature blends.
She has already shared stages with the likes of Kotwane Hikwa, DJ AshT, Nizhe De Soul, Ryan Synth, Mellow & Sleazy, and Leemckrazy, proving her craft earns her place among the best.
Whether she wins or not, Sfiso is embracing the moment.
“The nomination already got me excited. I don’t know what I’d do if I win,” she said.
